COLUMBA ICON 'RETURNS HOME'

AN icon of the Patron Saint of Londonderry, St Colmcille, has been temporarily installed in the church named after him in the Long Tower.

Mayor Gerard Diver yesterday handed over the icon of St Columba, on loan, on behalf of Derry City Council.

The icon was originally commissioned as part of an exhibition of icons from across Europe hosted in the Gordon Gallery formed part of a cultural exchange between the Association of Irish Iconographers, and was later purchased by the council for its Civic Collection.

The contemporary icon was painted by Tamagiota Boutfikaki from the Pan-Hellenic Society ...
