Prohibition left its mark on St. Joseph

Dec. 5, 1933, brought cause to celebrate amid St. Joseph
headlines of the Great Depression, a lynching and a serious chinch-
bug crop infestation.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt intended to let the party begin.
With commercial distillers not yet running, he arranged imports of 4
million gallons of liquor -- a four-month supply -- according to St.
Joseph Gazette archives.
But the repeal of Prohibition, ratified 75 years ago Friday, was
less of a celebration in St. Joseph and more of a somber passing of
time.
For one, it closed the chapter on St. Joseph's loss of major
