William H. Avery, 91, a leading American rocket and ramjet
propulsion research scientist who held patents for rocket
propellants, a "people mover" walkway and a process for collecting
energy from seawater, died of pneumonia and congestive heart failure
June 26 at a retirement home in West Yarmouth, Mass.
He lived in Silver Spring from 1947 to 1996 while he worked at
Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel. Upon
