There's a new series on Radio 4 in which Michael Portillo tells us
he knows more history than us. Last Monday's The Things We Forgot to
Remember was about how we play up the role of the Battle of Britain
and why we have forgotten the battle of Mers El-Kebir, which could
arguably be said to have contributed as much to our national security
as the more celebrated conflict of 1940.
This is, of course, a bogus opposition, created only to cause a
bit of a stir. I also know about Mers-El-Kebir and resent the
implication that I do not. But take away Portillo's specious thesis,
and indeed Portillo ...
