Tactile values: that was the phrase coined by Bernard Berenson, the fin de sicle American art historian, to praise the Renaissance painters of Florence. Their special gift, he said, was "giving tactile values to retinal impressions". Looking at the bodies they depicted, we have the "illusion of being able to touch a figure". We can feel them in our fingers and our palms. Florentine painting actually stimulates the tactile imagination to a higher degree than the sight of reality. All its emphasis is on the touchable aspects of things.
