Grasshopper races thrill Herminie's H.W. Good students

A runaway grasshopper who hopped around the classroom 18 years ago at H.W. Good Elementary School inspired a new teacher to hold an annual grasshopper race.

"While the students were trying to catch it, it just kept hopping all over the place, and I'm looking at this and I'm saying to myself, 'Bingo,'" recalled Lou Candelore, a third-grade teacher. "A light bulb went on, and I said, 'Let's race these guys.'"

Candelore, who had been looking for a culminating activity for a unit on grasshoppers, decided to incorporate the idea of a race about two years into his career.

The tradition continued ...
