Alexander Mackenzie

CANADA'S first Liberal Prime Minister was Scottish-born
politician Alexander Mackenzie.
Mackenzie was born in Logierait, near Pitlochry, in 1822.
He emigrated to Canada West (now Ontario) when he was 20 and
worked as a stonemason before establishing himself as a building
contractor.
His interest in political reform led him in 1852 to become editor
of a liberal newspaper, the Lambton Shield.
After the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867 by Glasgow-
born John Alexander Mac-Donald, Mackenzie was elected by Lambton to
the country's first House of Commons.
