The first time I really looked at the Pont du Gard, near Nimes in southern France, my reaction was not, as it should have been: "My word, what a stupendous example of Roman architecture." It was: "Arghh . . . no!" as my family threatened to disappear before my eyes.

I had consigned my children to a friend as I set up a picnic base camp by the riverside in the lee of the mighty monument. He had taken them up to the top of the bridge and was now - no, surely not - walking them across.
