The Arts: `It's not mad, it's De Mille' Buried beneath the sands of California lies the city that Hollywood forgot, the film set of the 1923 silent epic, `The Ten Commandments'. William Langley reports on the latest plans to excavate it

Cecil B. De Mille's 1923 epic The Ten Commandments was the
Titanic of its time. It cost more money than any previous film, and
ended with a sinking. Down, down into the slippery sands went the
set De Mille had built on a remote stretch of California coastline,
until there was nothing to be seen of his temples, palaces and
soaring Pharaonic follies.
For more than 75 years, Hollywood's own lost city lay undisturbed
beneath the dunes near Guadalupe, a small town two hours' drive
