Celebrating 10 years of marriage to a wine merchant calls for more than the usual "Champagne break", with the standard complimentary cuvee maison chilling in the room on arrival. What we were after was vintage all the way.

My husband and I met in Paris - our first rendezvous was outside the Orangerie in the Tuileries gardens - and though we'd happily returned many times since, we'd always stayed in crummy hotel rooms with nicotine-stained walls and springless mattresses. Once - and most memorably - we took a room above a slaughterhouse.
