The business of trying to force mutually-owned institutions to
convert into public companies used to be the exclusive preserve of
publicity-hungry eccentrics. But, like all sports, carpetbagging has
progressively become more professional. Over the past year, part-
time players have gradually been forced to make way for
sophisticated investors who see building societies and life
