A gem with Hilliard's fingerprints on it

I put on the quarter-centenary exhibition for Nicholas Hilliard
at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1947. For more than 50 years I
have been engaged in discriminating between the works of Nicholas
Hilliard, Isaac Oliver and other Elizabethan and Jacobean
miniaturists, so I was entertained to note that your art
correspondent Andrew Graham-Dixon (In the Picture, Magazine,
November 18) agrees with "experts" who attribute the Man with a
Background of Flames to Oliver.
I can record with complete assurance my opinion that this
miniature is a characteristically brilliant work by Hilliard. The ...
