From Judaea to 'Jedi' censuses across the ages

Censuses are almost as old as civilisation itself. The ancient Egyptians used census information to help plan the building of the Pyramids and, according to the New Testament, it was a census in Judaea that brought Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem when Jesus was born.

Even in Biblical times, censuses attracted controversy. King David's census of the Israelites was said to have incurred the wrath of God, who brought down a plague which killed 70,000 people.
