Meet Mr and Mrs Wandsworth, the archetypal thirtysomethings. He works in the City and she in the West End. They have a full-time nanny for the children and the Labrador, and there is an Aga thrumming away in the kitchen. They have smiles on their faces because in the last five years the value of their house has doubled. For some couples in their position it has even tripled.

What is it about Wandsworth that has attracted the middle classes in such droves in recent years? Why has it become such a haven for dual-income young families?
