Ah, those fun-loving Dutch. I was just wandering through the
centre of Leiden, admiring the architecture, when I saw a middle-
aged woman in a green raincoat hitting a man over the head with an
umbrella. It was done with such conviction that it took me several
seconds to realise I was watching some free street theatre. The
middle-aged woman was a man wearing lipstick.
Leiden could not be pompous if it tried. In the town centre,
instead of the statue of some self-important 19th-century bigwig,
there was a statue of a man in a cloth cap clutching a bunch of
