In anticipation of my meeting with the playwright Arnold Wesker -
co-founder of the "kitchen sink" school of drama and, with John
Osborne, pioneer "Angry Young Man" - I telephoned four senior
figures in the world of English theatre and received precisely the
same reaction from each of them: "He's impossible." I called a
producer at the BBC and she said: "Arnold Wesker? He's dead, isn't
he?"
Ever ready to go against the grain of received opinion I am here
to report that Wesker is 69, alive, fit, well, and utterly charming.
