When the Rev. Brian Lisowski was caught with a suspected
prostitute in the summer, parishioners at St. Bede the Venerable
Church began to think their pastor had been keeping secrets from
them.
They were right -- he had a million of them.
When the Roman Catholic priest resigned in July, the Archdiocese
of Chicago said it had discovered that Lisowski had systematically
skimmed more than $1 million from the parish in his five years as
pastor. The theft became apparent when the amount gathered in
collections increased dramatically after Lisowski left.
