THE Hermitage Museum in Leningrad had only been open for
three-quarters of an hour on June 15, 1985, when a middle-aged man,
who had hurried ahead of the crowd to Rembrandt's great
masterpiece, Danae, produced a knife and slashed the nude at the
centre of the painting twice across the stomach and thigh.
A woman who was admiring The Angel Preventing Abraham from
Sacrificing his Son Isaac on the opposite wall screamed. A
