THE Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is usually a sedate affair -
an event one ambles around in the same benign spirit as at the
Chelsea Flower Show. This year, however, instead of being greeted
by "Cat in Basket" or a still life of a pear, visitors will be
confronted by "kill, kill, kill" and "HATE HATE" written across a
picture of men firing guns. One does not have to be steeped in
art-world politics to know that the work (price tag: pounds 1
million) is by the Royal Academician and American artist, R.B.
Kitaj, who is still in pursuit of newspaper critics, the men he
says murdered his wife.
