IN THE city of Kanazawa I met a character straight out of the
pages of Japan's most famous novel. I had been wandering the
streets in search of something to eat when I stumbled, purely by
chance, upon one of Kanazawa's best restaurants. It had, running
along one wall, a stream well stocked with fish and lobsters and a
net to catch them with. The waitresses wore kimonos, and porcelain
plates decorated with gold leaf adorned the shelves.
