One Friday late in winter,

- past Candlemas - the sun

sits splintered in the beeches

proclaims a battle won

an unaccustomed silence

pervades the hedge and heath

the copses, brakes and spinneys

and everything beneath

One misted yellow morning

with jewellery of dew

- a churchyard haul the spiders

have draped across the yew -

Past kissing-gates and palings

with little left to do
