THE ROPES were thrown back on to the deck and the boat-taxi
drifted away from the mainland and out across the lagoon. I should
have been looking at the view, but our captain, who was howling with
mirth at a joke he was sharing with the first mate, had just spat a
set of false teeth on to the deck. They had landed by my feet. The
