HALF A century ago an industrious scholar unearthed a document
which listed the amount of black cloth allotted to each official
mourner in the funeral procession of Oliver Cromwell. It included
allowances for the "Latin Secretaries" who had dealt with the Lord
Protector's correspondence and document-drafting in the international
language of diplomacy: "Mr John Milton, Mr Merville and Mr Drayden."
