WHEN George Meredith died in 1909, he was widely regarded - among
the cognoscenti, at least - as having been the foremost literary
figure of his time. Probably only Hardy would have got more
votes. And it is easy enough to see what the fuss was all about.
His books are bold, imaginative, original, shot through with large
liberal ideas.
Unfortunately they are also almost unreadable. You can still get
something out of them if you persist, but first you have to fight
