SCIENTISTS in Australia are hoping to curb the country's cull of kangaroos by giving the animals contraceptive treatment.

Each year, millions of kangaroos are killed by farmers, hunters and others, as part of their drive against the creatures, regarded as pests in many rural areas where they damage crops and fences.

But many Australians are increasingly critical of the cull, arguing that it is a cruel and inappropriate treatment of one of the country's national symbols. Now, researchers at the University of Melbourne have begun a trial of a long-lasting contraceptive implant on the animals. A ...
