Snorkel workers hope for future

ELWOOD, Kan. -- The Snorkel International plant in Elwood survived the flood of 1993, a buyout in 1997 and another merger in 1999.

But local leaders and workers at the plant aren't sure the company can survive the economic downturn of 2001 -- and Snorkel officials aren't making any guarantees.

"Nobody can guarantee anything," said Rick Sassu, vice president of human resources for OmniQuip, the parent company of Snorkel. "We are doing everything we can. We are taking appropriate actions. We think the company definitely has a future."
