In the mid-1960s becoming a police officer, especially a black one, was uncool in some factions. It was when cops were called "pigs." It was a time when many black and white youths came to disrespect any uniform, police officers at home and the armed forces in Vietnam.

But on April 11, 1967, Herman Merrill became St. Joseph's first black police officer anyway. By most accounts, he was well respected among his peers and by the public he served.
