Dublin's Abbey Theatre is no stranger to the odd riot. Best known, perhaps, is the one that occurred on the first night of JM Synge's Playboy Of The Western World in 1907. Sympathetic to Ireland's new nationalist movement and still fat on 19th century romanticism, the audience refused to believe that Synge's vision of peasant women lusting after a loveable eejit who boasts of killing his father was a true representation of rural Ireland.
