The balsam fir tree could disappear from the forests of West
Virginia within the next decade, unless humans intervene to help.
The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy is launching a rescue
mission for the balsam fir this weekend. Volunteers will collect
thousands of seeds from the trees. Some seeds will be stored, while
others will be grown and replanted.
"We've seen so many trees in trouble: elm, beech, sugar maples,"
said Dave Saville, a member of the Conservancy who is leading the
effort. "One by one we are losing our trees. That's why we are
trying to save the balsam ...
