Many of the musicians, folklorists and dancers who formed the original core of West Virginia's Vandalia Gathering are no longer alive. And many might not have been known outside of their rural communities had it not been for the annual folk festival, which has become an important cultural showcase and summer kickoff all in one.

The Vandalia Gathering turns 25 this year when the festival comes to the state Capitol Grounds. The event runs Friday through Sunday in and around the Capitol and Cultural Center. Admission to the three-day celebration of mountain culture is ...
