More than 50 years since scheduled seaplanes last flew over Britain, consigned to the history books by the advance of land-based airports, the service is about to take off once again.

A commercial seaplane operator has launched an ambitious bid to start regular flights from the river Clyde in the middle of Glasgow to Arran, Bute and the Highlands. It would establish Glasgow as Britain's only licensed water aerodrome.
