SOUTH HADLEY, Mass., Feb. 28 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mary Lyon, a -- if not the key figure -- in the development of women's education in the United States and the founder of Mount Holyoke College in 1837.

Students at Mount Holyoke College mark today's birthday with a formal dinner graced with a traditional dessert known as Deacon Porter's Hat, while hundreds of residents of the area in which Lyon was born in western Massachusetts are holding a gala birthday party.
