OF SCOTLAND'S great explorers, David Livingstone is undoubtedly the best known. The man who discovered Victoria Falls, the Zambesi, Tanganyika and Lakes Ngami, Nyasa, Shirwa, Mweru and Bangweulu - hitherto uncharted expanses of Africa - returned home only twice, publishing his two books, Missionary Travels and The Zambesi and its Tributaries.

Awarded a medal by the Royal Geographical Society for his achievements, the 19th-century explorer and missionary was appalled by slavery.
