Shorthand still in demand

THE strange squiggles that are the phonetic writing down on paper of words as they are spoken - no matter the speed, but that depends on the skills of the writer - used to be the essential part of every journalist's armoury. If you did not learn shorthand - there are different types of this fast writing but the method devised by Sir Isaac Pitman tops them all - you had little chance of making it in journalism.
