Magisterial stamp of a bedside manner

RECENTLY, I met an old friend who revealed he had not been to a
doctor in the last ten years. I pitied rather than envied him. As a
walking battle-ground of bacteria with a frog in the throat, a
twinge in the joints and an ache in the back when the barometer
shows "wet and windy", I would feel deprived if I did not have an
occasional encounter with a medico about my afflictions ranging from
psychosomatic nose bleeds to feelings of vague malaise.
As a practising hypochondriac, I have studied doctors closely and
have noted their readiness to express sympathy, even empathy, with
