Celebrating a neglected history

A MEMORIAL dedicated to keeping alive the history of one of
Scotland's least-known rebellions was unveiled in Glasgow yesterday.
Around 50 members of the 1820 Society gathered in Sighthill
Cemetery in the north of the city to remember the historian and
Gaelic activist Seumas Mac a'Ghoghainn, who started life as James
Smith but adopted a Gaelic version of his name in keeping with his
Nationalist politics.
His book The Scottish Insurrection of 1820, first published in
1970, is still the only full-length study of the proletarian
uprising that convulsed central Scotland shortly after the ...
