Battle of Britain pilot tells how he saved Churchill's life

A BATTLE of Britain war hero told yesterday how he prevented Winston Churchill's wife from shooting him in the back.

Churchill was visiting the Royal Air Force base at Croydon in 1939 and was inspecting Spitfires on the runway, while Wing Commander James "Sandy" Sanders showed his wife, Clementine, around the cockpit of his fully-armed Gladiator fighter plane.

"Churchill was bending down in front of one of my guns and his wife went to press the firing button," Mr Sanders said. "I knocked her hand away to stop her."

A year later, Churchill was to become the prime minister who led Britain ...
