EDINBURGH may fairly claim to be the Athens of the North. But is
Paris the Southport of the South?
Were the elegant, tree-lined boulevards of the fancy French
capital inspired by the salty streets of a seaside town on
Merseyside? Was the blueprint for metropolitan splendour spirited
across the English Channel in the head of no less a personage than
Napoleon III?
There is evidence to suggest that this was indeed the case,
according to a local historian and former professor of architecture.
