HABIB Bourguiba was the architect of modern Tunisia, one of the
last of a generation of leaders to take his people from colonialism
to independence, and one of the most consistently pro-western
leaders in Africa and the Arab world. It was Bourguiba who turned
Tunisia into the most westernised Muslim nation.
