Leading novelist Dame Iris Murdoch dies at 79
|
ONE of the greatest British novelists of the 20th century, Dame
Iris Murdoch died yesterday, aged 79.
Her devoted husband, Professor John Bayley, who nursed her in her
declining years and wrote movingly about their changing
relationship,
was by her side at the end.
Dame Iris, a prolific writer with 27 novels to her name, was
diagnosed as suffering from Alzheimer's disease in late 1996.
Last night, tributes poured in from authors and academics who knew
her and her work.
Lord Bragg, the writer and presenter of the arts programme, the
