GALINA Ulanova was, quite simply, the Margot Fonteyn of Soviet ballet. She was the prima ballerina of both the Kirov and the Bolshoi companies and was a legend in the pre-war Soviet Union. In the Fifties, when foreign tours became politically accepted, her artistry was acknowledged worldwide. Ulanova was born into a dancing family.
