Protesters locked out on Brazil's big day
|
PROTESTERS turned out in their thousands yesterday to protest
against the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese
discovery of Brazil. Armed police and soldiers stopped the
protesters from reaching the visiting dignitaries, including the
presidents of Brazil and Portugal.
Since its inception a year ago, the Brazil 500 Years of Discovery
celebrations have attracted criticism from indigenous Indians,
dispossessed rural workers and the country's black population.
