Gum trees face the chop

A stand of large gum trees that dominates the skyline above Atawhai's Bayview Rd is to be chopped down at the request of developers because of concerns they threaten nearby houses.

The 25 trees are on the boundary of the Bayview Rd reserve and owned by Nelson City Council, and the council's community services committee on Wednesday agreed they should be removed now.

Council horticulture asset manager Peter Grundy said the request to cut the trees down had come from Bayview Subdivisions Ltd which was worried about their size.
