Gum trees' future debated

The fate of 30 gum trees at the north end of Little Kaiteriteri Beach was debated by residents and Tasman District Council representatives at a meeting in Motueka last night.

About 20 residents were divided over a proposal to cut several of the trees down and replace them with a native canopy.

Chairman of the council's community services committee, Cr Nathan Hamilton, said the council aimed to remove the oldest gum trees immediately and plant native trees in their place.
