A dog is the only thing on Earth that loves you more than you love yourself, wrote US philosopher-humorist Josh Billings. Not surprisingly then, dogs have arguably been the favourite pet animal of humans. Cat-lovers will bridle at such a contention, and certainly cats may well outnumber dogs as pets. But, as is often said, cats have people for pets, while dogs exemplify virtues we struggle to find in our fellow humans: fidelity and constancy.
