TOPPENISH - Customers entering John Ferguson's saddle repair shop find a sense of history in every tool and machine he uses to transform manure-encrusted, rain-shriveled saddles into comfortable, polished and well-padded seats.

Old photos of his granddad, Mike, who used to make saddles, and his dad, Darwin, hang on the wall in Ferguson's Saddlery, just above the myriad tools that cut, trim and embellish leather pieces used in saddle repair.
