Yakima in Transition -- Stores Closing, but Optimism Remains

Like falling dominoes, the closures that began two years ago have kept coming.

Future Shop. Montgomery Ward. J.C. Penney. Heilig-Meyers furniture.

Most recently, two stores that were a point of local pride to many Yakima residents announced they would shut down: 72-year-old family-owned Schultz Furniture, and that crown jewel of downtown shopping, Nordstrom.

Easy to measure are the loss of hundreds of jobs and the tax revenue the city of Yakima uses to help provide basic services.

Far less measurable is what the closures mean about the community and its future.
