Road Safety Campaign Launched in S. Africa

Deputy President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday launched a campaign to boost road safety in South Africa, where more than 9,000 people die on the roads annually.

"The challenge we face is one of ensuring that people comply with road safety laws, not because of the penalties, but because they know it is correct to do so," Zuma said at the launch in Johannesburg.

He said the strategy sought to combat corruption within local transport authorities. The launch comes ahead of the Christmas season which sees hundreds killed or injured on the country's roads.
