Russia has set March 22 as the date of the space station Mir's destruction after the orbiter has been flying in space for 15 years. On the eve of Mir's coming home, a review on the history of Russia's developing space stations is provided.

The station Mir lasting out its final days in orbit is the eighth orbital station in the history of Russian space exploration and the first and last station of the third generation. The first and main element of Mir, a core module, was launched into orbit on February 20, 1986.
