Rumor of Police-Peddler Conflict Denied

A spokesman with the city government of Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, today denied a widely spread rumor of police-peddler conflict.

A recent rumor said that late last month 3,000 street peddlers clashed with 800 local police and that some people were injured or killed.

The rumor was cited as first being announced by a New York-based human rights organization through the Internet. According to the spokesman, "there was no conflict at all, and not any deaths or injuries." He ...
